How to Plant a Tree: Celebrate Earth Day with Whispering Hills Garden Center

plant a tree for earth day

As Earth Day approaches on April 22, it’s the perfect opportunity to connect with nature and make a positive impact on our planet. At Whispering Hills Garden Center, we believe that planting a tree is one of the most rewarding ways to celebrate this special day. Trees not only enhance the beauty of our surroundings but also provide essential benefits to the environment, including improving air quality, conserving water, and supporting wildlife.

Why Plant a Tree on Earth Day?

Earth Day is a global event dedicated to environmental protection. Founded in 1970, it has grown into a worldwide movement that emphasizes the importance of sustainable practices. Planting trees is a direct and effective way to contribute to this cause, as trees absorb CO2 and other pollutants, making them vital players in combating climate change.

Choosing the Right Tree

At Whispering Hills Garden Center, our knowledgeable staff is ready to help you select the perfect tree for your space. Whether you’re looking for a flowering ornamental to enhance your garden’s aesthetics or a hardy shade tree to cool your home and reduce energy costs, we have a variety of species tailored to the local climate and soil conditions.

Materials Needed for Tree Planting

Before you start planting, make sure you have the right materials:

  • Evergreen, Flowering or Shade Tree: Choose from a wide selection from Whispering Hills Garden Center.
  • Shovel: For digging the hole.
  • Garden Gloves: To protect your hands.
  • Espoma Bio-tone Starter Plus: This all-natural plant food enhances root growth to ensure your tree gets the best start.
  • Watering Can or Hose: For initial and regular watering.
  • Mulch: To retain moisture and control weeds.

Step-by-Step Guide to Planting Your Tree

  1. Choose the Location: Consider the full grown size of the tree to avoid future issues with buildings or power lines.
  2. Dig the Hole: The hole should be twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper. The tree should sit at the same depth it was growing before.
  3. Prepare the Tree: Remove the tree from its container. Gently loosen any circling roots to encourage outward growth.
  4. Add Espoma Bio-tone Starter Plus: Apply according to package instructions at the bottom of the hole to give your tree a nutrient boost.
  5. Place the Tree: Set the tree in the center of the hole. Make sure it’s standing straight.
  6. Backfill the Hole: Fill the hole with a mix of native soil and compost. Gently tamp down as you go to eliminate air pockets.
  7. Water Thoroughly: Water the tree to settle the soil and hydrate the roots.
  8. Mulch the Base: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the tree, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.

Aftercare

Water your new tree regularly, especially during the first few growing seasons and during dry spells. Monitor for pests and diseases and consult with our staff at Whispering Hills for any concerns or advice on tree care products.
